Markus Schulz - Los Angeles '12 - Full Tracklist Details

During the last weeks of 2011, via a dedicated video-cast, Markus Schulz revealed that the setting for his 2012 City compilation would be the sprawling electronic dancetropolis of Los Angeles.

On making the announcement, Markus said: “electronic dance music has blown up huge in the United States this past 12 months. One of the main reasons driving that is the scene in Los Angeles, where a new generation of clubbers are uniting with long-term fans and creating one of the most passionate scenes anywhere on the globe. I’ve played there many times in my career, at the Monster Massive festivals, the Electric Daisy Carnivals and 3 years New Years Eves at Together As One, and they’ve all been so memorable in their own way!”

Following the broadcast Markus began his musical mission to embody the dance-heart of one of the biggest cities on the planet and build a mix testament to it.

As is now the City series’ custom path, ‘LA ’12’ discs are opened by Markus himself, who infuses each mix with an atmospherically charged overture.  Under his San Andreas Soundlab alias, ‘Hollywood Boulevard’ teleports the listener straight down into the early evening thrive of the iconic Tinsel-town sidewalk. As the sun starts to set, the rush of the passing traffic melts into long expectant synth sweeps, which, beat-free, beautifully capture the palpable anticipatory buzz of a long LA night ahead.

Danilo Ercole and Wellenrausch soundtrack this day-to-night transformation with their newest studio wares, ‘A Man With Two Names’ and ‘Million Miles To Run’. Pushing ‘LA’12’ further down this potent, progressive freeway, the swirling strains of Nifra ‘Dark Harbour’ and the epically spacious ‘Hyperfocus’ from Mark Otten intoxicate the mix and ratchet its tension. As the tougher sounds begin to filter their way in with ever-greater frequency, so the clubbers pulse quickens. The auditory punch of Beat Service’s ‘Fortuna’ produces a knockout moment, as does the unrestricted uprush of Styller’s striking ‘Quantum Mechanics’. Pushing Mix #1’s mercury conclusively through the roof is the rolling thunder of ‘Bolandish’ – Markus’ latest atom-splitter.

For just a moment disc 2 drops the drums out with the evocative, echoic 911 wail of ‘Avalon’. Markus’ tribute to the famed Hollywood club, the track plants you right outside its front door. One final glance back up at Capitol Records, etched against LA’s night-black cityscape, and the whooping rush of Arnej’s ‘We Unite’ sucks you into Avalon.  From there ‘LA’12’ wholeheartedly and vociferously seizes control of your arms and feet. Through the concussive beats, shock-waving synths and digital discordance of tracks like, Elevation vs. Grube & Hovsepian ‘City of Angels’, KhoMha’s ‘Artemis’, Aaron Camz ‘Aqwa’ and Mr Pit’s purpose built outro mix of ‘River of Hearts’, it delivers LA’s pitch-perfect audio expo.
If you’ve not clubbed the city before, this compilation will all-but secure the credentials for you. Capturing the pumped fission and pure passion that put Angelenos’ feet on the floor all-year-round, it makes a compelling a case for the city’s accession to nu electronic dance capital.

Markus Schulz – Los Angeles ’12 is out on Feb 17th 2012. The download version is available to pre-order through iTunes now thru this link bit.ly/zyxJ3g and the CD can be pre-ordered from the Armada Music online store here: bit.ly/yUIzrb
The LA’12 Launch Gigs: To mark the release of Markus’ 2012 city-comp, he’ll be taking its music to the legendary LA club, to give clubbers the full, unforgettable and LIVE Los Angeles ’12 experience! On Presidents Day weekend in the US, it’ll be the Hollywood club that will play host to two very special parties to celebrate the release of Los Angeles ’12. Saturday February 18th is a 21+ event (pre-sales now sold out) with Sunday the 19th being a 18s and over show. Markus says: “It’s going to be extended sets from me alongside some very special guests and it’ll be the first time in my career that I’ve done two back-to-back shows in LA”. “So get your plane tickets, booked, your hotel rooms reserved and your plans made – it’s going to be an incredible weekend!”

EVENT REVIEW: Above & Beyond at TLA Philadelphia February 10th, 2012

Above & Beyond swept into Philadelphia this past Friday on their next-to-last stop in the Group Therapy 2012 tour, with a show that was sold out weeks in advance. The “Pride of Anjuna,” their well-worn Group Therapy tour bus, was parked on 3rd Street in downtown Philly next to the Theater of the Living Arts. TLA was a simple venue with a reasonably large main dance floor, and extra bars & VIP areas on a second level that overlooked the main stage, but every single square foot was crowded. It was absolutely no surprise that it sold out so far before the show, since TLA couldn’t possibly have fit everyone who wanted to attend. As Above & Beyond themselves—or, rather, Paavo and Jono, once again the 2/3 of the trio who toured here—later commented on their tour blog, the venue was incredibly hot with all of the body heat. Coat check was closed and full early on, tended by a couple of extremely bored-looking attendants with a remarkably small closet, given the number of people who were packed into the place—it was full from wall to wall, back to front, every inch occupied with screaming Anjunafans.

This second round of Group Therapy continues from the same album that Above & Beyond toured for in the spring of 2011, where they made stops across the country through March and April, but the set composition was slightly different. Through the night, it was studded with Anjunabeats releases from the latest compilation, Anjunabeats Volume 9, as well as remixes of Group Therapy album tracks. The epic orchestral album track “Filmic” filtered quickly into the Norin & Rad remix of “In and Out of Phase,” a triple-threat collab between American artists Andrew Bayer, Matt Lange, and Kerry Leva; meanwhile, the first A&B original to drop was the Maor Levi mashup called “Breaking 2Night,” with Oceanlab’s Justine Suissa-driven a cappella pitted against an Eric Prydz instrumental. Meanwhile, 2011’s ubiquitous Anjunabeats collab (I’m talking about “Rebound,” of course) was replaced by its equally-catchy successor from the same Mat Zo/Arty team that had everyone talking, “Mozart”—and the crowd was singing every note so faithfully that Paavo commented cheekily, on the display screen behind the decks, “Sounds like you guys know all the words!”

Soon enough, the Group Therapy tracks came out in full force, starting with the Club Mix of “On My Way To Heaven,” another heart wrenching performance by Richard Bedford that wasn’t featured in the last tour, and going to crowd favorite “Thing Called Love” in short order. Zoe Johnston’s appearance on “You Got To Go” played out in the Kyau & Albert remix, and another new-to-this-tour treat to hear was the Myon & Shane 54 remix of “Every Little Beat,” also with Richard Bedford. “Bloom” from rising favorites Norin & Rad was an unsurprising feature—A&B have commented that they’re supporting the track vigorously.

A high point of the set for the crowd was A&B’s own bootleg mashup of Kyau & Albert’s “Be There 4 U” against Daft Punk classic “One More Time,” which delighted longtime EDM fans and newcomers alike. The personal highlight of the entire set for me, though, was the spine-tingling, timelessly wonderful Cosmic Gate remix of Oceanlab’s “Sirens of the Sea”—I didn’t expect to hear that at all, and I was completely glad to be wrong. But the set wrapped up in short order with the Arty remix of Ferry Corsten’s “Punk,” which I must have heard at literally every single 2011 event I attended, and ever-present uplifter “On A Good Day vs. Metropolis”—still, the crowd was positively roaring by this point, and thus A&B accomplished what they set out to do.

The guys came back one more time to encore with “Tokyo,” their moving tribute to the Japanese earthquake & tsunami tragedy in early 2011, and—reminding the crowd once more via screen that “Life is made of small moments like these”—left a mark on their adoring fans as always. Was this the best A&B set that I’ve seen? Probably not. Their set composition has remained about 2/3 consistent since Trance Around The World 400 late last year. But is it always a total delight to experience the energy that Above & Beyond bring to every performance, and the way they can manage to interact with their fans and play to the crowd’s dynamic very effectively, proving that there doesn’t always have to be the stereotype of a distant DJ who merely plays tracks? Absolutely yes.

EVENT REVIEW: Paul van Dyk at Pacha Thursday February 9th, 2012

I’ve been a fan of Paul van Dyk for many years, and I haven’t been so excited to see a DJ perform like this for many years. I arrived at Pacha early because I wanted to avoid crowds and when I arrived it was surprisingly not as packed as I was expecting it to be, which was actually quite relieving. The vibe was absolutely perfect; Austin Leeds was opening for Paul getting the crowds ready with some great beats. I immediately began dancing and feeling this “family” vibe in the air because everyone was clearly anticipating PvD as much as I was. Looking over the ledge at the smiling faces below while grooving to the sounds of Austin Leeds got me ready to experience what was one of the best performances I have ever seen. What really made me feel great about this atmosphere was that everyone who was at Pacha was fan. PvD has been around so long now, so all of us who came out on a Thursday night have a tremendous respect for him and as 1 O’clock came around he definitely arrived just as expected.

Paul was very punctual, starting his set exactly at 1 am. Throughout the entire night PvD took all of us on a ride that we will never forget. I was astonished at his set up; he had two laptops hooked up, two keyboards and a mixer. I remember thinking to myself, wow this is going to be a hell of a set, and that it was. The fact that PvD played his entire set live, made my respect for him grow that much more. I have heard so many great stories about his sets in the past, and for me to first-hand experience and witness each step of his process makes me understand why he has been around for so long. The energy that man brings to his fans surpasses many of the great DJ’s I have seen before. He becomes completely alive with his music, it almost felt like all of us in the room were completely in sync with every song he played. He gave all of us fans a blast from the past playing his classic “For An Angel” and then fast forwarded to the present with “We Come Together”.

It was no surprise that he also played “New York City”, which was more than appropriate given where he was. One thing that caught a lot of us by surprise was a little taste of Dubstep, something that I was definitely not expecting. It was very clever though, due to the fact that Dubstep has become huge in the EDM scene, and in New York. Then he went back to Trance, and blowing all of our minds with the amazing talent he possesses as DJ and producer. I remember looking down at my phone and it being 4:15, and he was not finished. The high energy from PvD remained consistent throughout the night, and it made me not even realize how much time had really passed.

As 4:30 rolled around James Gill was getting ready to finish the night out. Once PvD ended his set, the entire room (including myself) was screaming “Paul Van Dyk” repeatedly, it was unreal. No one wanted him to finish, and he gave every one a run for our money giving us all he’s got. James Gill did a great job closing out the night with some classic Trance. The last song played happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time “Sound of Goodbye”, by Perpetuous Dreamer, an alias of the great Armin van Buuren. If you have not had the chance to see PvD perform live, you are missing out greatly. Musically and performance-wise he definitely proves his skills, and there is no doubt in my mind that Paul is going to remain a serious presence in the trance world for years to come.

Anjunadeep 04 Mixed by Jaytech & James Grant

With the past two editions both hitting #1 in the iTunes Dance Albums Chart, Anjunadeep 04 mixed by Jaytech and James Grant arrives with the label in better health than ever before - as evidenced by a recent DJ Mag nomination for 'Best British Record Label'.

The last 12 months has seen the Above & Beyond imprint unveil one of house music's hottest new talents in Dusky, whose album 'Stick By This' has been acclaimed by everyone from DJ Mag ("an intoxicating album full of life and flashes of brilliance ****") to Pete Tong - with Tong naming it as one of his favourite albums of the year - while other Anjunadeep artists such as Matt Lange and Andrew Bayer on the label have blossomed, the former being described by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe as "the new Deadmau5" and the latter's 'It's Artificial' LP winning plaudits from Lowe again and even day Radio 1host Nick Grimshaw.

Showcasing tracks and remixes from acts like Dusky, Tom Middleton, Maceo Plex, Vincenzo, Solarity and Andrew Bayer, 'Anjunadeep04' mixed by Jaytech & James Grant is the latest showcase of the label’s evolution; a 28 track journey through deep house, immersive melodic grooves and modern progressive.

Representing the deeper, more house-influenced end of Anjunadeep’s increasingly wide spectrum, label A&R James Grant effortlessly combines warm Maceo Plex'esque electronics, classic deep house vibes (Dusky “Lost Highway”), low-bass grooves (Tom Middleton’s Liquatech Mix of Paronator “No Gravity”) and the melodic house sound in which Anjunadeep has made its name.

Grant also contributes three remixes to the mix in collaboration with Andrew Bayer and acknowledges the key role played by Bayer in achieving the desired sound for CD1: "We had a clear vision for where we wanted the mix to head and Andrew really helped me realise that in this mix," says Grant.

Taking time out from finishing his highly anticipated second artist album, Australian Anjunadeep star Jaytech picks up the baton and pursues the more upbeat side of the label’s sound. From the future disco synths of Suspect 44’s “Neon Feel” to the melodic big room tech of Soundprank’s “Boundless Energy”, the Australian lays down a masterclass in modern progressive. Bringing things to an emphatic climax, Jaytech’s own “Atlantic” is the perfect embodiment of the musicality and class sewn into the mix.

To celebrate the upcoming release of 'Anjunadeep 04', James Grant and Jaytech have each mixed a 15 minute mini-mix of their respective CDs:

Infected Mushroom to Release 'Army Of Mushrooms' May 8 on Dim Mak; First Single "U-R-So-Fu**Ed" Due Out February 14

Nowadays, it's becoming increasingly uncommon for bands to spend years crafting an album, which truly manages to push the sonic boundaries. But the electro rock/dance duo INFECTED MUSHROOM--comprised of Amit "Duvdev" Duvdevani and Erez Eisen--is an exception to the rule, as they spent close to two and a half years honing their eighth studio full-length releaseARMY OF MUSHROOMS. Scheduled for release May 8 via Dim Mak RecordsARMY OF MUSHROOMS is undeniably INFECTED MUSHROOM’s most stylistically varied album to date.

The first single from the album, “U-R-So-Fu**ed,” is due out tomorrow, February 14.  and has the duo dipping their toes slightly into dubstep laced with an operatic vocal.  It’s accompanying video was shot in HD and features the pair matched up against Argentinean wrestlers Lilian Pavone and Norma Álvarez.  Check it out here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0DTHEQgses&feature=youtu.be

"It's been ready for a while, but we kind of changed the album all the way up until now," explains Duvdevani. "It's basically a brand new album that was intended to be out last year. A lot of material came in at the last minute and a lot of new influences. I think it's a huge difference because the album is much more diverse now than it was before—sound-wise and music-wise. This album has the most diverse electronic music genres that we have ever had before. On this album, we have drum and bass, dubstep, electro, trance and glitch hop."  Other tracks on the album include collaborations with Borgore, Zedd and Zia Macovich.

Originally formed in 1997 and hailing from Kiryat Yam, Haifa District, IsraelINFECTED MUSHROOM has certainly left their stamp on the electro dance and rock genres, having worked with the likes of Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) and Jonathan Davis (Korn), in addition to twice being voted among the world's "Ten Best DJ's" in DJ Magazine (however, they do not DJ). In the process, the group has issued such hit albums as 2009's Legend of the Black Shawarma (which peaked at #9 on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums chart) and scored such dance hits as "Killing Time" and "Smashing the Opponent."  Look for more details to be revealed soon about ARMY OF MUSHROOMS and INFECTED MUSHROOM’s 2012 tour plans.

Having worked with EDM’s producer elite and winning the ‘Best Hi-NRGEuro Track’ award at the International Dance Music Awards of 2010 with Dash Berlin collaboration ‘Waiting’, has made Emma Hewitt one of the fastest rising names in dance land. Her characteristic and versatile voice became a favourite both in and outside the EDM scene. Outstanding live performances and acoustic sessions have made her a crowd’s favourite. In 2012, Emma Hewitt is ready to be more than ‘just a featuring’. Her album ‘Burn The Sky Down’ reveals a side of the Australian vocalist that most of her audience haven’t heard yet. Emma”It is a very exciting time in music that is allowing people from all genres and backgrounds to branch out into different styles and areas that perhaps they wouldn’t have been able to do before. A lot of the styles are fusing together and listeners are more willing to accept change from producers and singers now. Especially in EDM, and I think it is fantastic, I hope things keep heading down this road!”

Dance lovers afraid to miss out on the beat, have no reason to worry. Emma”Every song will have an ambient, or slightly pop version as well as various dance remixes. We worked with producer Lee Groves on the album, he has worked with artists such as Marilyn Manson, Gwen Stefani and Depeche Mode, so he was great at creating the kind of dark popambient soundscapes we were looking for.”
‘Burn The Sky Down’ is set for release on April 13th 2012 on Armada Music.

On January 17th, Emma will perform live at the Armada Beach Festival in Argentina’s Mar Del Plata alongside Aly & Fila, John O’Callaghan, Shogun and more, as well as performing with Cosmic Gate in New York’s Pacha and Washington’s club Glow on January 27th and 28th. Featuring customised symbol plates embossed with limited edition serial numbers, the brilliant-white versions of Pioneer’s ever-popular player and mixer will stand out in any environment.

The CDJ-2000 Limited and DJM-900nexus Limited will be available from February 2012 at a SRP of 1,599 GBP including VAT.

KEY FEATURES OF THE CDJ-2000 LIMITED

1.) Supports music from any source and works intuitively with DJ software
- The player supports various media formats, so DJs can simply plug and play music from laptops, USB keys, SD memory cards, CDs and digital files in multiple formats, including MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF.

- DJs can play from our rekordbox™ software, directly from the player, for ultimate flexibility and creativity. rekordbox analyses the BPM and beat position of songs from your computer, allowing DJs to categorise music by genre and create playlists before a gig.  Songs and playlists can be easily transferred from rekordbox to the player via USB, while cue and loop settings can be recalled during the set for truly crowd-pleasing performances.

- Adding yet another layer of user-friendly flexibility to the CDJ-2000 Limited is the built-in PRO DJ Link, which removes the need for lots of connections and cables and allows DJs to concentrate on what they do best. Using just one LAN cable, DJs can connect up to four CDJ-2000s and instantly share music and data between the players. Plus, the DJM-900nexus can be linked to the players, so highly accurate BPM and beat location information can be sent straight to the mixer from the CDJ-2000s.

2.) Delivers master-quality, club-standard sound
Accurate sound reproduction is guaranteed with the CDJ-2000 Limited’s master-quality, 24-bit/48 kHzsound card andhigh-efficiency, Wolfson Microelectronics-manufactured D/A converter, so DJs can deliver club-standard audio that will please even the most discerning ear.

3.) Large, full-colour 6.1-inch LCD display
An oversized, full-colour screen enhances the CDJ-2000 Limited’s operability: playlists are easy to browse through; album artwork is clearly displayed; waveforms are instantly viewable; and track information can be read easily.

4.) Needle Search™ function
Pioneer’s unique Needle Search function replicates the experience of using an old-school turntable – DJs simply touch the jog wheel at their chosen point in the track and press play.

KEY FEATURES OF THE DJM-900nexus LIMITED

1.) Four-channel sound card offers excellent input and output with no loss of sound quality
An integrated 24-bit/96 kHz USB sound card allows for pristine sound reproduction and eliminates the need for third-party audio interfaces, while the 32-bit digital processor ensures there is no degradation of the source audio. The mixer’s four input and four output lines operate simultaneously and the output signal path can be changed to suit DJs’ needs – whether they are performing, recording or producing.

2.) Complete Traktor compatibility so DJs can simply plug in and play
Laptops can be connected to the mixer using just one cable, allowing DJs to instantly access Digital Vinyl Systems such as Traktor. The DJM-900nexus Limited’s output can be sent straight back to Traktor so DJs can record their mixes at the push of a button. Plus, Traktor’s timecode feature lets DJs spin and scratch digital files using vinyl and CD control without the Traktor sound card.

3.) A wide range of high-definition effects for truly creative DJing
The DJM-900nexus Limited is home to the intuitive X-Pad, a touch-sensitive strip that allows DJs to simultaneously engage Beat Effects and adjust functions like Reverb, Roll Time and Phaser LFO – using just one finger. The X-Pad lends itself to truly brilliant performances, offering an instant trigger with Quantize timing for live edits that are perfectly on beat.  And because there’s no longer any risk of using manually timed effects, it’s easier to be much more creative.

Professional-quality effects include:
- Reverb: Deliver processor-intensive reverbs without relying on unstable laptops. The Reverb function brings studio-quality effects with a two-minute tail, pitched room size control and input frequency filtering for crowd-stunning results.
- Spiral: Create psychedelic breakdowns and interludes with a single hit using this pitch echo. Modeled on a tape delay effect, it offers the kind of stunning feedback looping usually only found in studio plugins.
- Slip Roll: The ultimate beat-mashing tool, the Slip Roll effect puts rhythmic slicing right at DJs’ fingertips. Use the X-Pad to continuously re-sample and loop chunks of audio as you slide between loop sizes, perfectly in time with the beat.

4.) Built-in Pro DJ Link enhances performances
Linking the DJM-900nexus Limited to a CDJ-2000 allows perfectly accurate BPM and beat location information to be exchanged between mixer and player, so effects can be applied without losing the beat. Status alert lights flash when the CDJ has been engaged, so DJs know when a track is playing out to the speakers.  The true benefit of Pro DJ Link can be seen with Beat effects as they can apply rekordbox BPM and beatgrid information from compatible Pioneer DJ players to keep the effects in perfect time. Cue Link, meanwhile, acts as an additional audio channel so DJs can preview tracks through their headphones, straight from rekordbox.

5.) Next generation durable fader
The DJM-900nexus series boasts Pioneer’s most robust faders to date offer the ultimate in durability both above and below deck. The internal fader component is positioned out of harm’s way, sparing it from drink spillages during performance, while the external P-Lock Fader Caps prevent the faders from slipping accidentally.
